What do graduates do with a degree in futures studies?
Many use futures thinking and skills in their existing careers. Those who become professional futurists work in large organizations as trend trackers, strategic planners, business and product developers. Others use their skills as independent consultants or working for small futures consulting organizations.
Is the program online?
Yes, students can take the program on campus or online. All the official correspondence (readings, assignments, homework, tests, etc.) goes through the website for all. Local students attend class on campus, and distant students participate in class via our learning platform or by listening to a recording of the class afterwards.
How long does the program take?
The program requires 12 courses. Full-time students can take three or four courses a semester so they can finish in 18 to 24 months. Part-time students take one or two courses a semester. (We strongly recommend no more than that.) So that can take from three to five years.
Is the degree just a business degree?
The official name of the program Futures Studies in Commerce, a name created by the University administration. Some students have business interests, but many do not. Graduates have studied education, environmental issues, the future of technology. Literally one can study any topic that has a future!
How do I enroll in the program?
Admissions requires an online application, a letter of intent, three letters of recommendation, acceptable scores on the GRE, GMAT or MAT, transcripts from previous colleges and universities attended and an admission fee. Deadlines for U.S. students are July 1 for Fall and Dec 1 for Spring semesters. Deadlines for international students is April 1 for Fall and October 1 for Spring semesters. Can students take the program from another country?
Definitely. If they come to the U.S. to study, they will require a student visa. If they take the program online, no visa is required. Check the International Admissions page on the UH website (http://www.uh.edu/admissions/international/)
Can someone take courses without being admitted to the program?
Yes, students with a Bachelor’s degree can take courses as a Post-Baccalaureate (PB) or Pre-graduate (new name) student. Students intending to eventually enroll in the program can apply up to four PB courses to their degree.
How much does the program cost?
The average cost for Texas residents is about $1600 to $1900 per course, depending on the number of courses taken. For all others, it is about $2500 to $3000 per course.
